365 days for tehching hsieh (how to channel your inner thelma golden)

  • 1 Afro American woman with large wild afro
  • 1 barber
  • 365 volunteers
  • 5 Obama dresses
  • Jewelry, sweaters, hats, scarves, glasses, and other accessories
  • 1 clothes rod or small suitcase
  • 1 wall clock with large numbers
  • 1 “page a day” calendar with large print
  • 1 photographer
  • Digital camera
  • Photo printer
  • Tape
  • One blank wall for photo backdrop
  • One blank wall for displaying finished photos

Place the stopped clock and the “page-a-day” calendar on the photo backdrop wall. Turn the calendar to December 31st. Ask the black woman to put on an Obama dress and stand against the photo backdrop wall. Invite one volunteer at a time to take their portrait with the black woman. Make sure the clock and calendar are visible in each photo. For each new photo, the black woman should:

1.  put on a different Obama dress

2.  change some aspect of her outfit

3.  roll the calendar back by one day

4.  roll the clock forward by one second

Every 14 photos, the barber should trim approximately 1/13 of the black woman’s original hair length.(By June 1st , her hair should be 1/2 its original length. By January 14th, she should be almost bald.)

Tape the photos up in reverse of the order they are taken, so that they read “January 1st, January 2nd , January 3rd…” If you have time, you can also animate the photos this way “January 1st, January 2nd , January 3rd…” using a video editing software.
