become an obama skirter

Did you know women in over 30 African countries wear fabric with portraits of black candidates during presidential elections? Now that we have our 1st black president, you can do it too! You will need:

  • to be an Afro-American woman or a black woman who has never had a black president before
  • a year when your first black president is in office
  • an African print fabric with your president on it
  • a tailor who comes from a country where women wear political fabrics (you can substitute an Afro American, or Caribbean tailor in a pinch)
  • a sense of style

Take the fabric to the tailor and ask her (or him) to make you a piece of clothing. It can be any clothing, not just a skirt. (Or order one online today at https://2011blackpresidentsdaysale.eventbrite.com) Wear it while your first black president is in office. You can do it every day, like I did, or 1x a week, like the BedStuy Obama Skirters did. When you wear the clothing, document the things you see happening around you. What did you dream it would be like to have your 1st black president? How does it feel? What is different than you imagined? What is the same? Are you changing because of it? How? What about your neighbors and your friends? You can write a journal, keep a blog, take photos, make a video diary, write an opera, choreograph a dance, make a mixtape. Do whatever you do best. Save the clothing and the documentary you made. Pass it on to your children.
