MoCADA TV has arrived! The Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Art has for the past ten years been at the vanguard of contemporary African Diasporan culture. The museum has now partnered with Media MVMT to present the first season of MoCADA TV, a half hour television program dedicated to profiling, artists, cultural institutions and businesses of the African Diaspora.

MoCADA TV WILL AIR WEEKLY ON WEDNESDAYS AT 12:30pm ON *BCAT BEGINNING THIS WED. JULY 13th AT 12:30pm

The photos on the left and right are of Aisha wearing a dress made from Obama fabric printed in Mali. Did you know women in over 30 African countries wear fabric with portraits of black candidates during presidential elections? The practice became popular in the 1950’-1960’s when many African countries gained independence from colonial rule. Several of these countries (Ghana, Nigeria, Mali, South Africa, and Tanzania) printed fabrics to celebrate our first black president, Barack Obama. Afro-American artist Aisha Cousins collected these fabrics, brought them to US fashion designers (many recent African immigrants), and wore the resulting garments in the USA everyday for a year.

The center image is a closeup of a limited edition “2011 Black President’s Day” fabric that was printed this year by award winning printmaker Shani Peters for Phase 2 of the Obama Skirt Project. The fabric was printed before we knew about the contest, but as luck would have it, it looks a bit like the Heineken logo. 44 skirts will be printed in honor of our 44th president, and hopefully sold to 44 Afro American women. More than just a skirt, they are an opportunity to document Afro-American women’s experiences of having their 1st black president in a way that can be passed on for generations to come.
